Raja Ravi Varma, is an Indian painter and one of the most celebrated artist in the history of Indian art, worldwide. He brought in European realism into the Indian art sphere and created his unique style, that interested masses into art across India.

Ravi Varma was not born in the royal family of Thiruvananthapuram, but was conferred the title of 'Raja' after he won the first prize at an art exhibition in Vienna in 1873.

With his mastery over facial expressions and expertise in the oil color medium, he highlighted feminine expressions so beautifully and vividly in most of his paintings like Sita Swayamvar, Yashoda and Krishna, Shakuntala and many more. He portrayed women in brocade saris, queenly jewellery, against splendid backdrops and set exemplary examples of Indian beauty in visual arts.

He started his own lithographic printing press in Mumbai, and the oleographs of Hindu Gods and Goddesses produced by his press, became so popular and loved by the Indian people, that even today Indian puja rooms are adorned by the pictures, inspired by his artworks.

Interestingly, India Post issued a postal stamp in his honour on his 65th death anniversary, depicting Raja Ravi Varma himself and one of his most iconic painting 'Damayanti Talking to a Swan'.
