As the story goes, King Janak employed some local women to decorate the walls and floors of his palace as part of the grand arrangements, for his daughter Sita's wedding with Rama!

Down the centuries, the women of Mithila have kept this tradition alive by painting the walls and floors of their houses for festivals and ceremonies like child birth or marriage.
