Madhubani Art

GI Tagged - Yes

A traditional art form created by the women of Mithila region in Bihar. This region is beautifully set between the lower ranges of the Himalayas and the River Ganga, and lies in the district of Madhubani; and thus these paintings are also popular as Madhubani paintings.

As the story goes, King Janak employed some local women to decorate the walls and floors of his palace as part of the grand arrangements, for his daughter Sita's wedding with Rama!

Down the centuries, the women of Mithila have kept this tradition alive by painting the walls and floors of their houses for festivals and ceremonies like child birth or marriage. Big, bulging, fishlike eyes, sharp nose and double-bordered figures sets this art form completely distinct and unique. Read more
